TOPIC OVERVIEW

HTML/Common Tags

The everyday elements you'll use to build nearly every page: headings, paragraphs, divs, spans and more.

9 QuestionsBeginnerHigh Priority ~8 min read

A small set of tags covers most of day-to-day HTML: headings (h1 to h6), paragraphs (p), generic containers (div and span), line breaks (br), horizontal rules (hr), and anchors (a). Each one exists for a reason — headings define the document outline, paragraphs group related text, and div and span are deliberately meaningless containers you reach for only when no semantic element fits.

Interviewers use this topic to check whether you pick tags by meaning rather than by how they look. Using h3 because it renders smaller, or stacking <br> tags to create spacing, are classic red flags — appearance belongs in CSS, while the tag should describe what the content is. Knowing when a div is the right choice (a purely structural or styling hook) and when it's a lazy default is a quick signal of experience.

What you'll walk away knowing

The purpose of headings and why heading levels should reflect document hierarchy, not font size
The difference between div and span, and when a generic container is actually appropriate
Why <br> and <hr> shouldn't be used for spacing or layout
How to choose a tag based on meaning first and styling second
